9th March - Bulkington Braves (A) 2 - 0 (L)

With the second visit the St James in as many weeks, and the 2 players back in the squad the Saints were hoping for a better result than the previous week. Saints started off down the slope on a dry but bobbelly pitch in lovely sunshine and very little breeze. The Saints didn't capitalise from the fact that Andrew could kick the ball into the opposition penalty area as the forwards played too far back, when only a touch was needed. Some good football was played by both teams but there were only 2 real attempts on goal in the 1st half, a powerful looping shot from Liam for the Braves and a clever effort from Jack T as he prevented the ball from going out for a corner, steadied himself and shot from a narrow angle to goal. To the Braves defender's credit he was the only other player on the pitch other than Jack who didn't expect the ball to go out for a corner and was able to clear the ball at the near post. On reflection the Saints shaded the first half as the Braves played deep and struggled to get forward, but the Saints again failed to make the most of their possession in the Braves half, shooting wide or running into trouble.
Half time 0 - 0
The Saints had the kick -off for the second half and showed their intentions by stringing 3 or 4 passes together, but without making any headway. The game continued in the middle of the park for the next 5 minutes or so before the Braves found Declan on the left, who managed to win a corner. The Saints failed to clear the cross and the Braves scored a scrappy goal after a scramble. The Braves began to run the midfield, had a couple of chances go wide, and brought a fanstatic brave save from the Saints goalie at the feet of 2 Braves players. Again a corner was given away on the other side, it was defended poorly without putting a challenge in and another goal came. The Saints did manage to attack down each flank and won a succession of throw-ins but the difference today between the teams was that the Braves defended in numbers, refusing to give corners away when a throw-in would do. The Saints can be proud of their efforts today for the first 20 minutes or so but as with a few games this season they've failed to adapt when substitutions are made and let their game slip. You can't get away with it when playing the better teams but as the lads get older and stronger it will come. It was a good game of football and but for the errors in the Saints defence had all the makings of a nil-nil. It was very similar to the game at Milby apart from the fact that the Saints were able to have a lot more possession, which proves that we are getting stronger and better. We look forward to playing them next year. My thanks to The Braves for the Mini Donuts and a mention must go to the referee who had a great game, always talking to, and encouraging the players.

2nd March - St Nics Colts (H) 0 - 2 (L) Police Cup QFinal.

The lads can be proud of their efforts in this game as only a couple of lapses in concentration enabled the Colts to profit. We know that the Colts pass well and can take teams apart, that's why they are top of the league, but they can't pass so well if you close them down and battle for every ball, as the Saint's proved today. It's unfortunate that all the St Nics teams have been placed in the same half of the draw for all Cup competitions this year, otherwise the Saint's may have progressed further, but they can take heart in the performance they gave without 2 of their key players. It should prove an interesting encounter when we play the Colts in the league fixture.
We knew that it would be difficult, but for the thickness of the cross bar when Max hit a great corner, a potential equaliser just before half time may just have given the lads the confidence they needed.
No one player was singled out as Man of the Match, as they all played their part, so it was awarded to the Coach (especially being his birthday)

24th February - Bulkington Bullets (A) 1 - 1 (D)

With the weather better than the last time the 2 teams met the Saints knew they were in for a tougher game than before Christmas. This said though, the Saints didn't look troubled at the back and had the majority of chances on goal in the first half, most of them wasted. With a bit more thought and time in front of goal they could easily have been 3 or 4 goals up rather than the one good goal by TOM E.
The second half started with the Bullets attacking up the incline and one of their attacks soon broke down. To everyone's suprise a penalty was awarded for a hand ball, a very harsh decision, (could the referee tell it was in the box from where he was standing, especially with the lack of line markings). The Saint's goalie had saved a penalty against the Under 10's on Saturday. The Bullets player hit the ball hard to Andrew's right, rather than the sporting gesture of passing it, as we did for the Bullets on the previous game. This goal increased the Bullets confidence and they headed wide from a corner. The Saint's soon regained their form and began to pass the ball well, Thomas E squandering another ideal opportunity from a great ball from Harry. It was again repeated a few minutes later after another good diagonal pass from Thomas V. The boys continued to press forward but were unable to find the other goal that they deserved, as the final whistle went dead on time, The boys can look upon this game as 2 points lost as they controlled the game well, but it was the wasted chances that cost them the game.. They will have learnt, (as will the management team), for the next game at St James's against the Braves.
If any of you are re-visiting this page after reading my comments posted last week I must apologise to the referee in question regarding my comments about the refereeing decisions and I have amended the report accordingly. You would have noticed that I did not mention him by name but I think that he did an outstanding job yesterday when we played the Braves and must be congratulated on this. His talking to the players and encouragement of both teams was how I believe refs should be with kids of this age group.

27th January - Grove Farm Rangers (H) 1 - 0 (W)

With fantastic weather, but no referee, the Saints were looking forward to the return fixture against a Grove Farm team that they found difficult to break down in the first game. To be honest if it wasn't for the Grove Farm goalie the score could have been a lot more. He made some fine saves and the Saints hit the woodwork on 3 occasions, with all the midfield and forwards going close. Saying this though, it looked as though the keeper would still have got to the shot that Max hit the bar with. probably the highlight of the first half.
Half Time 0 - 0
The Saints kicked up hill and were dominating midfield but still found it difficult to get the ball past the goalie. He made a fine save to his left from Jack T, pushing the ball onto the apex and it looked as though the game would end in stalemate. Both Toms had efforts well saved but with Aidan brought back on to play up front it looked as though the extra strength could pay off. Max replaced Jack T for the dying minutes and the ball broke though after some good work by Harry and Aidan, leaving Max racing forward with both Aidan and Tom in support. After taking a similar goal against the Chiefs you'd put your mortgage on MAX scoring when it's one on one and he didn't dissapoint, finding the top right hand corner as the goalie came off his line. The re-start enabled Grove Farm to mount one attack but the game soon ended with the Saints lucky to claim all 3 points.

6th January - NCYP Leopards (H) 6 - 0 (W)
|
|
The First game back after the Christmas break and it showed. With both Thomas and Tom as subs, Alex and especially Jack W had the luxury of a full game. With Harry sunning himself in far off splendour, Russell was dragged away from the oval ball, to deputise. Even with the Saints fielding a starting line up, slightly under strength, the Leopards played the 1st 10 minutes like "lions" and to anyone watching you'd have wondered why there were16 places between them in the league. Max and Jack T had chances as did Russell. Aidan and Andrew had to work hard at the back as the Leopards won a couple of corners. Having watched the minnows beat higher opposition in the FA cup the day before, there was no wonder Saints supporters were getting anxious. The 2 Tom's replaced Russell and Max and the 1st goal finally came. Jack W controlled well from a pass in from Jack T on the left, his shot on the turn, well saved by the Leopards keeper, but the loose ball was side footed over the line by JACK T from 2 yards as he followed in. Both Tom's had shots go wide and the Saints started to take control as the half ended. Half time 1 - 0
The 2nd half started as the 1st ended with the Saints on the attack and the 2nd goal came with a wonderful effort from THOMAS slotting the ball in from 5 yards after beating 4 defenders. To their credit the Leopards didn't give up and were still battling like tigers, but began to lose their shape and more gaps appeared. Tom shot in a corner hard, that the goalie spilled and MAX pounced to notch up the 3rd. The Leopard's goalie was then hit full in the face by a Thomas screamer, with the lose ball placed hard into the net by Tom. With the goalie in some distress and having to leave the field, it was agreed to re-start with a drop ball, ruling out Tom's goal. JACK W then shot into an open net as the Leopard's replacement goalie was left facing 4 forwards, as they descended upon goal like hyenas, ready for the kill. The Saints were still thwarted as the goalie pulled off 3 or 4 great saves with cat like agility. TOM then got his reward (having assisted in 3 of the goals) for some fine efforts down the right as he cut in and hit the ball powerfully into the goal. The Leopard's box became more crowded as the Saints piled forward with only Russell sensibly staying back. Alex broke through, but it was a Saints player that prevented a shot on goal, as more blue shirts prowled around. The game ended with MAX scoring a fine goal high into the net from outside the crowded box.
We wish the Leopards luck for their remaining games this season.

2nd December - Bedworth Eagles (H) 4 - 0 (W)
|
|
With the state of pitch 1 poor, due to overnight rain and the Under 8s game, the Saints moved down onto the smaller pitch 4. Bedworth Eagles are a team with some big lads so the Saints knew they were going to be in for a strong, spirited game. The opening 5 minutes or so seemed to be a midfield stalemate with neither team troubling the goalies. with Aidan feeling under the weather both Alex and Thomas coped well in defence clearing any Eagles attcaks. Tom E went close with a shot that flew over the bar and both Jack T and Max went close as the game seemed to open up. With about 3 minutes left of the half the heavens opened and it poured down (not unlike a couple of weeks before). With the wind driving the rain in almost horizontal the Saints began to pass the ball around and HARRY broke through the defence to score a fine solo goal. The Saints settled and were able to control the game until the end of the half.
Half time 1 - 0
The second half started brighter, as the rain had stopped and the Saints continued to attack. A corner was won on the right and TOM miss hit it at a defender, but he made no mistakes with the rebound firing it hard in to the goalies feet for number 2. Tom then made a great run forward, his pass finding JACK W unmarked in the box, who calmly trapped it and slotted it high into the open goal. The final goal came as the Saints attacked in numbers, JACK T making sure as Max's shot slowed in the goal mouth mud. A great game today in the conditions proving that if the lads play as a team their efforts can be rewarded.

25th November - Chiefs (A) 0 - 1 (W)
|
|
This was the first of the return fixtures with the Saints looking to do better than in the home fixture where they lost a close game 1 v 2. As the players gathered for the team talk they realised that wing wizard Tom Ellis was not present. Heads dropped and it needed a few words from the coaching staff to lift them.
Saints played with 3 at the back. Aidan and Thomas V were the right and left backs with Alex just in front, in the centre. Harry anchored the midfield with Max and Jack T pushing forward on the flanks when attacking. Andrew was in his usual place in goal. Straight from the kick off the Chiefs piled on the pressure. The Saints were pinned in there own half but dug deep. Harry and Max were battling hard in midfield trying to protect the defence. The Chiefs broke through twice in quick succession but were stopped with timely tackles from Alex and Thomas. After one Chiefs attack broke down Aidan found himself flying up the wing towards the Chiefs goal only to have his cross blocked. After 10 mins Alex made way for Russell who took over the heart of the defence. Andrew was by far the busier keeper saving on more than one occasion from persistent attacks on the Saint’s goal. As the half came to a close though the Saints began to put the intensive passing practice they have been doing in training for the last few weeks to good use. Max, Harry and Jack were starting to make things happen up front which gave the defence a bit of a break. Max had a great shot saved just on the stroke of half time after some good ball skills and great pass from Harry. Thomas then also burst forward, his pass only needing a toe to put it in the back of the net.
Half time 0 - 0
After a positive half time team talk the Saints emerged with the belief that they could finally get a result against the Chiefs. It was the Saints that were now starting to boss the midfield. Thomas V was having great game frustrating the Chief’s attacks. He was also responsible for some powerful runs forward setting up some good Saints attacks on the Chief’s goal. After about 5 mins of the second half Jack T made way for Alex. After a shuffle that saw Alex slot back into the defensive midfield role and Russell move to the left midfield, Saints worked hard and after a great through ball Max found himself unmarked and heading for goal. The Chief's goalie made himself and big as possible but MAX unleashed a powerful shot giving him no chance. That’s 2 in 2 for Max and he seems to have found his shooting boots. The Chiefs appeared to get desperate shooting straight from the kick off but it did not trouble the Saints goal. Russell then made a run through 3 or 4 Chiefs players before hitting a looping left foot shot that the Chiefs goalie took comfortably. The Chiefs did push on having a few shots wide of goal and a couple of corners but Alex, Aidan and Thomas tackled tirelessly. Max made way for Jack W late on as the Saints held firm. A corner in the last minute led to a fierce shot from well outside the area from Thomas V which was well held by the Chief's goalie.

A great result from a great game of football. Both teams battled well and as with the Braves game it looked as though whoever scored first would benefit. My thanks to Jez for the write up and to Jason and the rest of the Chiefs parents, supporters and players for a lovely gesture of cakes at the end of the game. All the "Saints" wish them well for the rest of the season.

18th November - Bulkington Bullets (H) 4 - 1 (W)

|
What a horrible day.....With the Unders 8s having braved the atrocious weather for the earlier fixture it only seemed right for the match the go ahead. With hindsight the game should have been abandoned as the weather got even worse. Credit must go to both teams and their parents for carrying on and the game was bizarre for a few reasons. Bulkington played some of the 1st half with only 6 players although players were stood (nicely wrapped up) on the touchline, the Saints goalie became an ice statue and wouldn't play the 2nd half, and to be honest, who can blame them. The foolhardy, who should have know better, carried on oblivious to the sensible option, to witness an amazing penalty award (well done Thomas, a great pass to the goalie) and a really open and entertaining game of football, especially considering the conditions. My thanks to Leon and the Bullet's team and parents for a wonderful effort (my team and parents also). The Saints look forward to the return fixture, hopefully with better weather.

14th October - Grove Farm Rangers (A) 1-2 (W)
|
|
A second game against a Rangers team within 2 days. This time we didn't have to travel so far, but the pitch was almost identical in size (or lack of it) although in slighty better condition in the goal areas. The Saints won the toss and decided to kick up the "hill" with Alex playing at the back with Aidan, Thomas V, Harry & Tom E in midfield, with Jack T up front. The Grove Farm kick-off was broken down in midfield and the Saints were soon on the attack through the middle with Jack and Thomas linking well to feed Tom, the keeper tipping the ball around the post. A couple of Saints corners followed that went unrewarded. Grove Farm came back into the game but were reduced to shooting from distance down the slope with Alex covering well alongside Harry and Aidan. 2 Rangers corners were ably dealt with by the same trio. A high ball was dropped by Andrew after a nasty bounce (we've all seen them go in) and the Rangers forward was unable to profit as Andrew recovered well to smother the ball. His kicking was also up to standard allowing the Saints midfield to push on towards goal. Tom hit both posts with a looping corner, all spectators amazed at how it stayed out. Saints had a couple of free kicks that were hit wide, and Thomas went close hitting a shot wide across goal from distance. Another attempt on goal with Jack pushing into the area was put out for a corner. Tom floated the ball into the area for THOMAS to score a great goal with a bullet header into the roof of the net. Max came on for Thomas and the players needed a minute to organise. This allowed Grove Farm a corner that was cleared by the Saints defence and was hit strongly against the side netting as it was returned in. The Saints continued to press with Jack T hitting a shot to the goalies right and Max almost scoring with a header from another corner. Wardy came on for Jack T and the half ended with Harry and Max covering well in midfield snuffing out any further Rangers advances
Half time - 0-1
Thomas replaced Alex at the start of the first half with Wardy dropping back to left defence. Tom had a shot from the kick off that was put out by the Rangers keeper. The game became more even with the Rangers able to advance down their right, withy Wardy battling giants to prevent them getting near goal. The Rangers then had their best chance, hitting a shot high from a corner. Jack T replaced Wardy and Thomas slotted back into defence. The Saints began to fight for the ball more and came back into the game with Tom working hard down the right and Max down the left, keeping the Rangers sweeper busy with covering tackles.Tom shot on 2 occasions aiming low into the near corner firstly hitting the post and then just wide. Harry started to push further forward and hit a shot to the goalies right that he saved well. Jack T was ever busy up front shielding well to firstly lay the ball off to Max, who found Tom who in turn rounded the advancing keeper to cross for JACK to put the ball in with his chest. Saints then played a carbon copy move (ask your parents for expanation) that saw Tom's first time effort brilliantly saved by the brave Rangers keeper, whose reactions enabled him to tip the ball over the bar to rapturous applause from both sides.Alex replaced Harry for the last 2 minutes (which lasted about 5) and Thomas went forward with both him and Max going close. The game ended with the Saint's defence getting caught square after an uncharacteristic error. The Grove Farm forward hitting a great shot into the Saints goal. The final whistle went as the Rangers keeper took a goal kick from the shot on goal from the re-start.

A great game played by both teams today. The scoreline kept low by good peformances by both keepers. A slighty better performance than yesterday by the Saints, proving that with a bit of composure in front of goal we can score.

Fresh from last weeks defeat the Saints needed to get some goals. With Harry poorly, Alex slotted into left back alongside Aidan. Saints formation was 2-2-2 with Max and Thomas V playing in midfield and Jack T & Tom E playing as attacking midfielders. Having lost the toss it was Bedworth that kicked off up the field, but they made little headway against the 4 man midfield. I wasn't long before Tom E made one of his forward runs only to shoot wide. Bedworth attempted to get out of their half but were pegged back by Max and Thomas V. On the few times they did get into the final third Alex was there coming across to cover and put out to safety, working well with Aidan. Tom E hit a great corner from the left that evaded both Max's and Jack's boots, when it looked easier to score. The Saints continued to push forward and had many chances, with Tom putting another 2 close. Eventually the pressure told when Tom cut in and cooly placed the ball to the right of the Bedworth keeper with the side of this boot (Ronaldo style). Saints conceeded a corner that was run out of defence by Thomas V who passed to Jack T who in turn laid it in front of Tom E. The resulting shot was well saved by the keeper to his left but Bedworth were struggling to get back in numbers and the ball fell to Thomas V who hit a piledriver that the keeper saved in his midrift, raising applause from all supporters. Jack W came on for Jack T with 5 minutes of the half left and the Saints continued to control the midfield with Max battling hard. A corner from the left was taken short and again the Bedworth keeeper saved well from a Tom E screamer, tipping it over for another corner. Alex went short for the second and Tom's similar shot went desparately wide across the face of the goal. Bedworth came back into the game at the end of the half but were unable to break through with a weak shot taken well by Andrew advancing out of his goal.
Half time - 1 -0
Saints kicked off the second half and looked as though they were going to pass the ball through to goal but Bedworth broke the attack down and were able to push forward for what was their best spell of the game with the Saints defence having to cover well on a few occasions, conceeding a couple of corners. Jack T came on for Alex and both Thomas and Max began to push further forward and the second goal came from a great move that involved all the midfield players passing to each other firstly from a forward position on the left to the trusty right boot of Tom who again found the back of the net, this time the opposite corner. Thomas V went close a further 2 times but the Saints were finding it hard going against a packed defence and the goalie holding onto everything. The midfield did manage to give the ball away a couple of times but the threat was dealt with by Aidan in defence. Alex replaced Max for the last 5 minutes and soon linked well with Jack T, the ball passed through to Thomas, who faced with a solid wall of defenders laid it back out to Tom. His cross found Jack T in the box, who controlled well and slotted the ball into the net from 4 yards out. Bedworth tried to counter but any balls through midfield were pumped back up the wings by both Aidan and Jack W at left back. Saints had a couple more corners before the end but the Bedworth keeper was up to the task. The end of a thoroughly entertaining game of Football, came as Bedworth were about to take a goalkick. Well done to players on both sides.

30th September - St Nics Colts (A) 4 - 0 (L)
|
|
The Saints started this game at full tempo, first into the tackle, not giving the Colt's players any space. Harry, playing just in front of the defence was able to move the ball out to both wings with Thomas E and Jack T causing problems for the Colts defence. The first chance of the match fell to Jack who cut in from the left and hit a shot low into the left hand side of the goal, the Colt's keeper Danielle, able to save but not hold onto the shot. The corner was hit high but with no Saints players able to get a head to it, it went out for a throw in. Saints continued to apply the pressure with any Colts counters snubbed out by the ever reliable Thomas V and Aidan, pushing high up in the Saints half, Tom E made 3 great runs down the right and was able to get through on one occasion, only to see his cross and great work go un-rewarded. By this time the Colts were trying to get back into the game but finding it hard going against an eager Saints team display. Tom E then cut in from the right to see his shot hit the woodwork. The game then started to turn as the Colts mounted 2 counter attacks that saw Joe hit a crisp left foot drive low into the side netting and Andrew pulled off a cracking save at the feet of a Colt forward. Alex came on for Harry at 11 minutes and the Saints continued to press, first with Tom E shooting high into the top righthand side of the goal only for Danielle to pull off a superb save. Max was busy near the Colts penalty area and the ball ran out to Alex on the edge of the box who scuffed his right foot shot, the Colts keeper still needing to do well to save with Red shirts bearing down on the ball. Having found liitle joy on the right hand side with great cover from either Jack or Tom V, Sid eventually broke through for the Colts and they foced a couple of corners. At one of these the Saints failed to clear and with a rare piece of poor marking by the Saints, the Colts were able to take the lead with a clinical strike from Harry R. The referee soon brought an end of a throroughly entertaining half of football, the Saints probably unfortunate to be trailing by the solitary goal.
Half-time 1-0
Harry came back on for Jack in left midfield, rather than his usual position, just in front of the defence, at the start of the second half. This was a mistake that was soon to become apparent as the Colts were able to mount attacks easily in the middle of the pitch. Harry was harshly judged to have handballed outside the Colts area when the ball was hit at him, as the Colts attempted to clear. This would not normally be worthy of a mention but it was monumental in the fact that it was the only freekick in the whole of the game, a credit to the players on both sides, to which the spirit of the game was be played. As the Saints pushed forward looking for a goal, the ever increasing gap between the defence and midfield grew and this, as we know in the past from playing the Colts in training, was soon exploited, and they passed the ball around a midfield and defence that was stuggling to get back into position. Soon the goal deficit was 4, all well taken goals in a nightmare 5 or 6 minute spell at the start of the half, Andrew standing no chance in goal. Jack W came on for Alex and Harry reverted back to his usual position, to cancel out the threat of the opposition Harry, something he ably achieved (albeit too late) earning him the Saints Man of the Match trophy. The Saints still pressed forward but were unable break through the Colts defence, Tom E trying a shot from the last re-start. This probably showed the teams frustration as they looked for a consolation goal. Jack T replaced Jack W and the Saints continued to press forward, with Max having a half chance, but not being able to get through the 4 man cover that surrounded his attempt. The resulting corner again failed to find a Saints player and was easily dealt with by the Colts.

The start of the season has arrived and with promotion to the top division , Saints look forward to a challenging year. With the introduction of two new players to the team, Alex Jones and Andrew Carey both have their debut’s today. The referee blows for the start of the game, the Chiefs start a little more positively with two or more surges into Saints defence. The Chiefs constant pressure results in two corners and a free kick on the edge of the box. Saints defend doggedly, with our usual strong defence of Aiden , Thomas V and a welcomed return of Harry, after a long summer break. Once the Saints get up to speed we start to counter attack, and give the Chiefs defence some threat. The best chance of gaining a lead came from Thomas E, collecting the ball from a pass out from defence, a right wing charge and cross into Chiefs goal mouth, saw Max just losing out to the keeper. From this came an optimistic call for handball from Saints, but the referee disagreed. Unfortunately the end of the half came with a runaway goal to Chiefs, giving Andrew in goal little chance of a save.
First half 0 - 1
With substitutions made before half time , we have Alex and Jack W on for Max and Jack T. The game seemed to shift in pressure in favour of Chiefs, with the second goal within minutes. The decision was made to put Max and Jack T back on to give Saints a little more strength in attack. As the game developed, it became an end to end battle, with Saints determination paying off, with two or three corners. Finally from one corner came a goal for Thomas E, with a scrambled goal mouth melee. At two one Saints start to step up their game, with some impressive attacks, and some unbelievable defending. As the game approaches its end, a free kick to Saints on the edge of the box , giving us hope of at least a draw. The kick fell to Thomas E, but the Chiefs wall and defence was able to clear the danger. The whistle blows, and brings the end of the seasons opener, and with the focused efforts of Saints, it will be a very entertaining year.
